A Three-Generation American Manufacturing Legacy

The Heim Group story is a true American success. In the early 1940s, founder William Heim supported the World War II effort by producing precision machine parts through his first company, the Service Machinery Company. Soon after the war, he acquired the David J. Ross Company, the original maker of Rousselle punch presses. Recognizing the growing global demand for metal stamping, Heim quickly expanded the Rousselle product line—introducing higher-capacity presses engineered for industrial growth at home and abroad.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Heim transformed Rousselle from a simple OBI press manufacturer into a leader in standardized, interchangeable, American-built stamping equipment. He added adjustable-bed, deep-throat, horn, and wide-bed models, increasing capacities up to 110 tons. Heim’s commitment to value analysis, standardization, and part interchangeability became the foundation for the company’s reputation for reliability and affordability.

Acquisition & Growth

In 1968, the Rousselle line was acquired by ALCO Standard, a publicly traded corporation. During this period, larger presses up to 300 tons were introduced, and manufacturing operations moved to a newly constructed facility near Chicago’s Midway Airport in Bedford Park, Illinois.

But William Heim wasn’t finished shaping the industry. In 1970, he founded a new mechanical press brake company and, by 1974, had launched a complete line of stamping presses under the Heim name. When ALCO divested the Rousselle line in 1984, Heim reacquired it—bringing both iconic American brands together under one roof. This reunion sparked the development of new high-capacity systems, including the Maxi-Stamper, with models reaching up to 1,000 tons.

The Heim Group Today

Today, with the third generation of the Heim family leading the company, The Heim Group continues to innovate while preserving the principles that set its presses apart: engineering discipline, part interchangeability, uncompromising quality, and unmatched durability. And one thing remains a point of pride:

Every Heim and Rousselle press is engineered, manufactured, and assembled in the United States.

Heim’s commitment to American manufacturing is not just history—it’s the foundation of its future.
